The Final Misadventure of Explodo-Cat
I'm pretty good at waking up at 6:30am on days I have to work, regardless of the presence of an alarm clock. When I woke up this morning to find that our already unreliable alarm clock was rendered more so due to the lack of power, I immediately located my cell phone to check the time. It was 6:36am. I also noticed that the rest of the apartment was likewise without power.
Caro called the apartment complex's office while I checked the news on my phone ("is it a killer snowstorm? alien invasion?? armageddon???"). The complex's answering service didn't answer - they're fired - and I found no such alarming news anywhere.
She then called Centerpoint, who kindly told us that yes, someone had been out there to investigate the problem already that morning and no, this was not their problem, call your apartment complex. Great. Showers in the dark for everybody. Hope you weren't keen on groomin there, fella. We managed to locate a flashlight ("I think I remember seeing one under the bed") and started our day.
Caro found out later from the complex's handyman that at some point during the cold winter's night, a stray cat thought that the transformer atop a power pole would make a great place to keep warm. One expoding cat later, our whole building was without power.
